Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterized by red cheeks or red patches on the face along with visible blood vessels. The medical term for what we know as ‘alcoholic nose’ is rhinophyma. It is a type of rosacea, a skin disorder that causes redness, inflammation, and small, pus-filled bumps typically concentrated in the cheeks, nose, and chin. Rosacea is a chronic condition that tends to flare and go into remission; however those with Rhinophyma may find that their nose may continue to grow. It was previously thought that excessive alcohol consumption was the cause of rhinophyma – hence the nickname alcoholic nose or drinkers nose.
However, you should also consider your own demographics to see if you are a likely candidate for the condition. It is important to remember that Rhinophyma is most common in Caucasian men between the ages of 50 to 70. If you do not fit into this category and are starting to experience redness in the face, it could be a sign of rosacea or another skin condition entirely. Either way, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible to determine the best treatment option for you.

No one treatment works for everyone, and effective addiction treatment programs usually offer a variety of approaches tailored to suit each client’s needs. The truth is that it only fuels a stigma regarding both conditions. Someone noticing early-stage rhinophyma could take it as a sign to cease drinking, while others would choose to throw caution to the wind and let it be.
Why Someone May Have A Bulbous Nose
It starts as an accentuation of the normal tissue over the nose in adolescence and young adulthood. The longer disfigurement and tissue overgrowth is present on the skin, the more likely the disfigurement can become permanent.
